Jan Lundgren Biography

1966
Born on 22 March 1966 in Kristianstad. Lives in Olofström for five years before the family moves to Ronneby, where Jan grows up
 
1971
Starts to play the piano at age 5
 
1979
Becomes interested in jazz at thirteen. Listen especially to pianists like Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner, Bud Powell and Bill Evans
 
1983
At 17 he starts as a bar pianist at the Ronneby Brunn Hotel (- 1985)
 
1986
Aged 20 he moves to Malmö for 5 years of musical study at the Malmö Academy of Music
 
1990
While still a student he is taken up by jazz notables Arne Domnérus and Putte Wickman.
Recording debut with saxplayer Ed Epstein on ”Art of Survival”
 
1991
Graduates from Malmö Academy of Music • Permanent member of the Malmö-based Monday Night Big Band • Performs with a succession of international jazz stars like Johnny Griffin, Deborah Brown, Stacey Kent, Conte Candoli, Herb Geller, James Moody and Benny Golson
 
1994
Releases his first disc in his own name – ”Conclusion” – with Jesper Lundgaard ( bass) and Alex Riel (drums) • First record release in the USA: ”Stockholm Get-together”
 
1995
Starts the Jan Lundgren Trio with Mathias Svensson (bass) and Rasmus Kihlberg (drums)
 
1996
First Japanese tour
 
2000
Performs with the Trio in Carnegie Hall, New York: “Swedish Jazz Salutes the USA”
 
2002
Second Japanese tour
 
2003
Starts collaboration with Putte Wickman

2004
Tours Swedish concert halls with the Trio • Third Japanese tour

2005
Starts a duo with Georg Riedel • Concert tour with French accordion-virtuoso Richard Galliano and Italian trumpeter Paulo Fresu • Concert tour with Lill Lindfors, Jacques Werup and the Trio

2006
Concert tour with legendary alto-sax player Lee Konitz.

2007
Première for solo recital “History of Piano Jazz” at the Stockholm Concert Hall • Contract with record label ACT • Fourth Japanese tour • Appointed Steinway Artist - www.steinway.com

2008   
European tour with Richard Galliano and Paulo Fresu • Tour with tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton • Concerts with Georg Riedel - "Lockrop" • Premier concert of "Magnum Mysterium" with the chamber choir of Gustaf Sjökvist
