When I began work at the Malmö College of Music, Lund University, three
years ago, one of the first persons I got to know was Jan Lundgren. He
had then recently finished his pianist training and continued straight
on as a teacher.
Whenever we happened to meet, Jan initiated discussions about
different aspects of jazz and I soon found out that he was not only
well acquainted with the history of African-American music. He showed
it also in his own playing, working with several groups in a whole
spectrum of jazz styles, from very traditional to modern ones. And he
did not only fit in extremely well in the different contexts but
enriched them.
He regularly performs with artist such as Anders Bergcrantz, Deborah
Brown, Arne Domnérus, Tomas Franck, Putte Wickman and others. Here, for
the first time leader of a recording and presenting music of his own
choice, he plays in what may be called a mainstream modern style. His
touch is soft but firm and he avoids clichés.
…..Conclusion: a debut of a piano player worthy of a great deal of attention.
